SILOETTEN

Many towns in Denmark have centrally located industrial silos; most are no longer in use, but continue to visually dominate the local skyline. This is also the case in the town of Løgten north of Aarhus, where the former silo complex has been transformed into 21 high-quality residences.

The actual silo contains staircases and lifts, and provides the base of a common roof terrace. Around the tower, the apartments are built up upon a steel structure in eye-catching forms which protrude out into the light and the landscape – a bit like Lego bricks. This unusual structure with its protrusions and displacements provides all of the apartments with a view of Aarhus Bay.

The old silo contains a mix of one- and two-storey dwellings – a structure that ensures that even the lower dwellings, which contain two floors, get full enjoyment of the view. The homes vary in size from approx. 90 – 225 m² and no two homes are alike. The low buildings at the town square ensure a clear view of the bay for the residents of the silo.

The buildings contain five shop tenancies, a small supermarket and five large homes with generous roof terraces. On the other areas of the plot, a park has been established with covered parking facilities, playgrounds and the option of staying. In addition, there are private gardens that ensure the homes have an attractive local environment and at the same time constitute a green contribution to the center of Løgten.
